Nge Lay (born 1979, Pyin Oo Lwin, Myanmar) is a multimedia artist whose work zeroes in on gender and societal metamorphoses. Collaborating with her husband, Aung Ko, they produce community-reflective art—from personal to global concerns. Lay’s art was showcased in several solo and group exhibitions, such as Beautifully Throned (Paris, 2023), documenta fifteen (Kassel, 2022), and the Third Kunming Biennale (Kunming, 2016).
For When Solidarity Is Not a Metaphor, Nge Lay is presenting a hanging sculpture entitled Spring Hero #2 (2021).
Spring Hero #2 reflects on the transformative role of women and youth in Myanmar’s political landscape, particularly during the 2021 resistance against the military junta. Challenging traditional political domains dominated by older men, these groups have emerged as dynamic leaders, hinting at the potential for a renewed political culture.
During this spring revolution, the revolutionary vigor and decisive leadership of Burmese women of all classes and ethnicities shook the military junta to its foundations. Right from the start, women fought vigorously on the front line
This sculpture is part of the Spring Hero series, acknowledging those actively involved but also commemorating the fallen heroines of the movement. The heroine chant of the spring revolution, a rallying cry that echoed throughout Myanmar and beyond, underscores the global resonance of their bravery. The ongoing series aims to pay homage to women worldwide fighting for justice and rights.
