Contemporary Art in Dubai at Alserkal Avenue

Share
Alserkal Avenue is home to Dubai’s most dynamic contemporary art spaces. Explore a neighbourhood where pioneering galleries, experimental programming, and global culture converge to shape the UAE’s creative ecosystem.
The Evolution of Dubai’s Arts Landscape
Contemporary art in Dubai has rapidly developed within the past two decades, now a leading culture destination in the Middle East. Once known primarily for its futuristic architecture and commerce, the city is now also acclaimed for its vibrant arts scene. Alserkal Avenue is the UAE’s most influential arts and culture destination, fostering a knowledge-sharing community that initiated the creative economy in Dubai.
Founded in 2007 by Abdelmonem Bin Eisa Alserkal in the industrial district of Al Quoz, Alserkal Avenue was born from a vision to create a home for the region’s creative community. The now 500,000-square-foot cultural enterprise expanded from a handful of warehouse conversions, cultivating a unique space where contemporary art galleries and homegrown creative concepts co-exist in a symbiotic nature.
Galleries at Alserkal Avenue
Alserkal Avenue houses some of Dubai’s most influential art galleries. The district's transformation from industrial zone to a thriving arts destination began with the opening of Ayyam Gallery in 2006. Today, contemporary art galleries at Alserkal Avenue present exhibitions spanning emerging voices to established practitioners, representing the UAE, the wider region, and the international art scene. Each gallery contributes to the Avenue’s diverse programming, offering visitors an ever-changing selection of solo and group exhibitions, artist talks, and public events.
Dubai’s Contemporary Arts Ecosystem
The UAE has successfully established itself as a global art powerhouse, supporting a diverse network of galleries, museums and institutions, and creative initiatives. Dubai’s cultural rise is anchored by annual events such as the internationally acclaimed Art Dubai, which has been running for 20 years, the Sikka Art and Design Festival, and Dubai Design Week.
Alserkal Avenue’s hallmark position within the Dubai art scene was spearheaded by its curated community model that blends commercial galleries, independent cinema, performance venues, and design studios. Its year-round programmes and commissioned public art showcase emerging talent, with landmark events such as Alserkal Art Week in March/April and November fostering international participation.
The Avenue’s multidisciplinary venue, Concrete, is the first building in the UAE to be designed by the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA) and to be shortlisted for the 2019 Aga Khan Award for Architecture. For Dubai Art Week 2017, the 600-metre space was inaugurated with an exhibition of modern and contemporary Syrian art, titled Syria: Into the Light, in collaboration with the Atassi Foundation. In November 2023, Concrete witnessed On This Land, an exhibition on the cultural legacy of Gaza that brought together the digital archive of The Palestinian Museum and works from the Barjeel Art Foundation’s collection. Concrete has hosted exhibitions and events with world-renowned institutions, including the Victoria & Albert Museum, the Montblanc Cultural Foundation, Hayward Gallery, the Ullens Foundation and the Aga Khan Museum.
Guided by the Alserkal family’s vision, the Avenue established the Alserkal Arts Foundation, a not-for-profit initiative that nurtures critical and intellectually curious projects that impact the cultural sphere in its proximity. It champions a wide spectrum of contemporary art forms, commissioning artistic projects and supporting multidisciplinary scholarship and alternative learning.
In 2017, its residency programme was created to cultivate a platform for artistic experimentation, sustained dialogue, and collaborative discourses. It supports research-led, socially engaged practices that can connect with the local community through an interdisciplinary series of public programming. In 2020, Alserkal Arts Foundation introduced its research grants to support dynamic individuals and collectives who disrupt conventional models and methods that challenge traditional modes of practice across disciplinary boundaries.
Alserkal Avenue’s partnerships with regional and international arts practitioners, organisations, and initiatives has established a critical network of creative imaginings and art-making across borders that is central to its ethos.
Plan Your Visit to Dubai’s Contemporary Art Hub
Alserkal Avenue is open to the public, with most galleries operating from 10am to 7pm from Monday to Saturday. Entry is free, and pets are welcome.
Best times to visit: The UAE’s cooler months (September to April) offer the most active schedule of events, including Alserkal Art Week, outdoor installations, and live performances. Weekend programmes frequently include farmer’s markets and workshops.
Getting there: Alserkal Avenue is located in Al Quoz, approximately a 15-minute drive from Downtown Dubai. The nearest metro station is Al Safa on the Red Line, from which you can take a short taxi ride. Parking is available on-site.
What to expect: A walkable neighbourhood with an open courtyard surrounded by art galleries, concept stores, and restaurants and cafés in reimagined industrial warehouses with urban aesthetics. Frequented by creatives, entrepreneurs, art enthusiasts, and those with a curiosity to explore, Alserkal Avenue draws visitors craving an edgy ambiance and a lively, avant-garde energy in its lanes.
