Alserkal Avenue presents Interrupting Patterns, a programme that invites audiences to collectively sit with the interruption of time itself during Ramadan.

Cutting across forms and genres of poetry, performance, film, and theatre, the programme explores what unfolds when you loosen your grip and break from routine––the ideas that slip through the cracks, and the stories that surface in the spaces in between.

Live Performances

Music will take center stage at The Yard with two acts: Ghazi & Boom.Diwan—led by Kuwaiti composer, guitarist, and vocalist Ghazi Faisal Al-Mulaifi—presents a collection of original compositions in collaboration with percussionist Berke Can Özcan (Turkey), keys player Jesse Boere (Netherlands), and bassist Steven Bedford (UK). Together, they explore our shared responsibility in the face of social injustice, while Tanaghom—featuring Hanan Halwany, Anas Ali Mortada, and Sandu—breaks musical conventions, blending Arabic Buzuq traditions with Indian rhythms, layered with keyboard melodies, piano chords, and deep bass undertones.

Tatreez Circles

Tatreez Circles at KAVE invites participants to gather in a circle and stitch their own stories. Drawing from the Palestinian storytelling tradition of patterned embroidery—passed down from grandmothers to young girls—these sessions honour heritage while challenging and reimagining traditional motifs.

Workshops

For those drawn to the written word and visual storytelling, Interrupting Patterns offers a range of literary and creative workshops. Archetypes & Echoes: Writing Through Imitation by Avni Doshi is a literary deep dive into mimicry and transformation in writing. Meanwhile, illustrator and artist Mohammed Al Shaibani leads a hands-on comic-making workshop, Comics Through Light, where participants will create their own comics and experiment with developing them on photographic film using analog processing techniques. Post-Processing: Capturing Prompts by Gulf Photo Plus & Dubai Poetry Slam bridges poetry and photography, inviting participants to explore spoken word poetry and respond to Editions from Gulf Photo Plus—a collection of photographs by SWANA artists. These visual prompts will spark reflections on themes of romance, grief, and peace.

Film Screenings

Curated by Cinema Akil, the film screenings at The Yard bring together bold cinematic visions that challenge narrative norms. The Tedious Tour of M, directed by Hend Bakr, traces the journey of Mohammed Hafez Ragab, the writer credited with reinventing the modern Arabic short story, and Divine Intervention, directed by Elia Suleiman, remains an iconic work of political satire and absurdist cinema.

Children’s Programme

Family-friendly sessions reframe Ramadan’s traditions for a new generation. Storytelling for Children breathes new life into traditional tales, offering young audiences a fresh perspective. Joy of Ramadan Giving, a hands-on workshop by Strawberry Fields, nurtures generosity and creativity through engaging activities designed for children.
