Wetland Research Lab Open Day + Film Screening

During Alserkal Lates in September 2023, we’re collaborating with waiwai Research & Design Agency and invited you to take a closer look at their team's ongoing material experiments from the award winning Wetland project.

We began with a film screening of Wetland by The World Around at Common Room to learn more about waiwai’s study of the crystalized salt and mineral deposits that form the UAE’s unique ‘Sabkha’ or salt flats. The Wetland project, first commissioned by the National Pavilion UAE - La Biennale di Venezia, won the Golden Lion Award for best national presentation at the Venice Architecture Biennale in 2021. During our session, we’ll be joined by waiwai’s lab manager, Aisha Alsahlawi, who will share more about the project’s early days and its more recent findings.

The screening began at 7PM on Thursday, 28 September 2023 followed by a talk and Q&A with Aisha Alsahlawi. A second screening took place at 8.30PM at Warehouse 50 and Warehouse 51, Alserkal Avenue

waiwai (named after a Japanese onomatopoeia which refers to the sound of a cheering crowd) is an award-winning multidisciplinary architecture, landscape, interior, graphic and urban design studio. Known for addressing the social, environmental, economical and technological aspects of architectural projects, the firm has worked on prominent cultural institutions including Jameel Arts Centre, Dubai Design District, Jeddah’s Hayy Jameel and Wetland Exhibition for the National Pavilion UAE at the 17th Architecture Biennale di Venezia.

To kick off the new art season, Alserkal Lates saw the Avenue come alive with soundscapes, multimedia exhibitions, and live music performances late into the evening. View the complete.
