Recipes of Memory

Salma Serry Nahla al-Tabbaa

Alserkal Arts Foundation, Common Room, Warehouse 51

Recipes of Memory explores how memory can be activated as source material in creating recipes.

Recipes of Memory explores how memory can be activated as source material in creating recipes. It aims to deepen our understanding of how food is shaped by/shapes our own past and identity as individuals, regardless of the larger collective’s imposed notions of "heritage.” The outcome is a collaborative body of recipes that weaves in storytelling, context and history related to each participant's personal narrative. Expect to contribute to a collection of recipes that are site-specific and very human. This workshop is open to all, and particularly those with an interest in food research and culinary ethnography.

Part of Rewilding the Kitchen, curated by Nahla Tabbaa.

Rewilding the Kitchen is an online/offline project embracing what we call ‘rewilding’— ingredients and food become actors with agency, activating primal cooking and processes that unfold as the ingredients ‘intend’ them to.
