Evil is Banal: Nour Malas
CARBON 12
Nour Malas’ exhibition Evil is Banal traverses the physical and emotional landscapes of worlds marked more by pervasive violence than by its absence. Trauma becomes interlaced with the experience of living, stretching the limits of both body and psyche.
Through Malas’ layered gestures of oil on canvas, a meditative eye catches fleeting glimpses of identifiable images. She blurs the boundaries between abstraction and figuration, creating vessels for the viewer’s own projections. A levity of humour threads through her practice, disrupting the initial impulse to describe the works as haunting.
A smirk peers through the density of Green Baby Monster, nestled amidst the melding crowd—a reminder of what can be both avoided and stirred up in chaos. Satire, after all, has always existed in the company of evil.
