Bubble Land: Naeemeh Kazemi
Part of Alserkal Art Week: A Wild Stitch
In Bubble Land, Naeemeh Kazemi invites viewers into a surreal, immersive oceanic realm, one that mirrors the absurdity, chaos, and fleeting moments of solace in contemporary existence.
Moving beyond the introspective solitude of La La Land, this new series transforms the deep sea into a mesmerising theatre, where bioluminescent creatures masquerade as carnival performers, and the fluidity of water distorts the boundaries between reality and illusion. Kazemi’s intricate, hyper-detailed compositions do not merely depict an underwater world; they entangle the viewer in its depths, demanding exploration and confrontation. Faces flicker between delight and despair, tentacles twist in chaotic harmony, and translucent bubbles offer ephemeral escapes, both playful and ominous. With each layered detail, Bubble Land becomes more than a landscape; it is an evolving narrative, a reflection of our own entrapments and liberations.
Through Kazemi’s masterful manipulation of oil and texture, the ocean is no longer just a setting, it is an unfolding spectacle, a space of refuge and reckoning, where every ripple and shadow holds a story waiting to be discovered.
