This talk explores the evolving definition of dance within emerging contemporary choreography.

It challenges conventional ideas, acknowledging that what audiences experience may not always resemble traditional dance forms. By examining how the concept of dance shifts across cultures and eras, the discussion invites us to rethink and redefine what dance can mean today.

The programme is presented in collaboration with Alserkal Avenue, the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region, and Aerowaves–a hub for dance discovery in Europe comprising 46 partners in 34 countries committed to identifying and nurturing emerging choreographers-with the support of ATER Fondazione and Italian Cultural Institute Abu Dhabi.

About the Artists

Ginevra Panzetti and Enrico Ticconi, based in Berlin and Turin, have been working as a duo since 2008. Their artistic research interlaces dance, performance and visual art. They delve into themes related to the historical connection between communication, violence and power, basing themselves on ancient performances, creating hybrid figures or images between history and reality. They gained international recognition with their choreographic work, Harleking (2018), which in addition to being presented at some of the most important international festivals, was presented at the European platform AEROWAVES Twenty 19, the New Italian Dance (NID) Platform and by Tanzplatform Deutschland 2020.

About the Moderator

Beata Stankevič, from Lithuania, is a cultural manager with a particular focus on contemporary dance. She graduated from the University of Music and Theater in Hamburg, Germany. Beata has been one of the few cultural professionals dedicated to developing dance as an art form in the UAE and is the country’s first independent, locally based contemporary dance programmer.

Since 2015, she has curated both local and international contemporary dance programs in Dubai, introduced stand-alone international dance performances, and presented the first contemporary dance works for children in the country. Beata has collaborated with various local cultural entities, including Alserkal Avenue, Sima Performing Arts, and the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region.

In 2020, she co-founded the HIBA Art Project initiative to further develop the dance scene in the UAE. Since 2023, Beata has been managing cultural programs at the Goethe-Institut Gulf Region.
