‘Fabien Fryns Fine Art’ takes over Warehouse 17 with the premiere show Facial Recognition. Curated by Barabara Pollack, the exhibition brings together the work of Francis Annan Affotey, Angeles Agrela, Alic Brock, Yukimasa Ida, Victoria Nunley, Julian Pace, Walter Robinson, and Adam Parker Smith.
The title, referring to the canonized artistic practice of portraiture, considers how, when technology is doing much of the looking, portraits have taken on a whole new significance. We cannot look away from the overwhelming intervention of facial recognition systems in our lives or how this ability to match one human with a database of faces is poised to destroy our sense of privacy, our sense of selves. The artists transform the image of a face, often beyond easy legibility. A range of options are explored for portraying a subject, rather than merely elevating the famous or exploiting the beautiful.
