Why call it Labor? On Motherhood and Art Work

Starts 6:30 PM

Ends 8:00 PM

Venue Warehouse 82

Published by Mophradat and Archive books, Why Call It Labor? comprises four essays and one conversation with contemporary artists and curators discussing their experience of becoming mothers as professionals in the arts, its reality and effects. While their reflections represent a similar strata of art worker in terms of background, class, and career trajectory, the impact of instruments of patriarchy on rendering maternity invisible that they describe is recognizable and insidious.

Mona Ayyash is a Dubai-raised visual artist. Her practice focuses on repetition, memorisation, slowness, and boredom. She holds an MFA in Studio Arts from Concordia University in Montreal, Canada. Her work was exhibited in Tashweesh at Maraya Art Center, as part of the UAE Unlimited programme in 2019. She was an artist-in-residence at the Alserkal Residency for their Fall 2017 cycle and recently finished a homebound residency with Warehouse 421.
